Usury Definition, Usury Law in Islam

What is usury? According to the language, usury definition means ziyadah (extra) or a developing. Meanwhile, according to the terms of the definition of usury is the addition to the property in exchange contract without any fee or taking additional of the principal or capital assets vanity.
In Islam, usury in any form and by any reason is forbidden by God. Thus, usury law is forbidden as arguments about usury from Allah SWT says in the verses of the Qur'an related to usury as follows.

Qur'an verses that forbid for faithful to not devour usury in Al-Baqarah verse 278:

يَايُّهَا الَّذِىْنَ أَمَنُوْا التَّقُوْا اللهَ وَذَرُوْا مَابَقِيَ مٍنَ الرِّبَوا اِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِيْنَ

Meaning: O you who believe! Be careful of (your duty to) Allah and relinquish what remains (due) from usury, if you are believers. (Surah Al-Baqarah: 278)


Word of God that will give torment or doom for those who devour usury, that is:

وَاَخْذِهِمُ الرِّبَوا وَقَدْ نُهُوْا عَنْهُ وَاَكْلِهِمْ اَمْوَالَ النَّاسِ بِاالْبَاطِلِ وَاَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَفِرِيْنَ مِنْهُمْ عَذَابًا عَلِيْمًا

Meaning: And their taking usury though indeed they were forbidden it and their devouring the property of people falsely, and We have prepared for the unbelievers from among them a painful chastisement. "(Surah an-Nisa: 161)

Word of God's about usury treasure that will not bring to the blessing:

وَمَا ءَاتَيْتُم مِّنْ رِّبًا لِيَرْبُوَا فِى أَمْوَالِ النَّاسِ فَلَا يَرْبُوَا عِنْد اللهِ وَمَا اَتَيْتُمْ مِنْ زَكَوةٍ تُرِيْدُوءنَ وَجْهَ اللهِ فَأُولئِكَ هُمُ الْمُضْعِفُوْنَ

And whatever you lay out as usury, so that it may increase in the property of men, it shall not increase with Allah; and whatever you give in charity, desiring Allah´s pleasure-- it is these (persons) that shall get manifold. (surah Ar-Rum : 39)

God's statement about usury in Al-Qur’an:

يَمْحَقُ اللهُ الرِّبَوا وَيُرْبِى الصَّدقَتِ واللهُ لاَيُحِبُّ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ اَثِيْم

Meaning: Allah does not bless usury, and He causes charitable deeds to prosper, and Allah does not love any ungrateful sinner.

Word of God which states that the sale and purchase was not the same as usury, that is :



اَلَّذِيْنَ يَأْكُلُوْنَ الرِّبَوا لَايَقُمُوْنَ إِلّا كَمَا يَقُوْمُ الَّذِيْ يَتَخَبُّطُهُ الشَّيْطَنُ مِنَ الْمَسِّ ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَالُو اِنَّمَا الْبَيْعُ مِثْل الرِّبَوا وَاَحَلَّ اللهُ الْبَيْعَ وَحَرَّمَ الرِّبَوا

Meaning : Those who swallow down usury cannot arise except as one whom Shaitan has prostrated by (his) touch does rise. That is because they say, trading is only like usury; and Allah has allowed trading and forbidden usury. To whomsoever then the admonition has come from his Lord, then he desists, he shall have what has already passed, and his affair is in the hands of Allah; and whoever returns (to it)-- these arc the inmates of the fire; they shall abide in it. (Surah Al-Baqarah: 275)

Some words of Allah is adequate thrill us as a believer, how dangerous consequences that would come to the people who did not stop usury or other forms of business activities that smells usury. Various usury aforementioned adverse impact on personal and social life. People who do not want to immediately stop the act of usury, as if he declares war against Allah and His Messenger.
